moroccan berber cape which is called a "Handira" and is an antique piece from the Beni Ourain Berber group in the Middle Atlas mountains. The foundation flat weave is exceptionally fine. The horizontal designs are embroidered in fine cotton, some of which has been left long at the back of the cape. This adds weight, and therefore warmth, to help combat the bitter winters. The condition is good and there is a little wear at both ends in keeping with the age and use. a very similar handira in both construction and size is shown in the text book "North African Textiles on page 85. Similar designs and good information on these rare capes can be found in "Marokko", page 147, and also the book published by the Washington Textile Museum, "Carpets and Textiles of Morocco", pages 120 and 126 to 129. Reference 2686. Size 128 x 85 cms., or 4ft. 3ins. x 2ft. 10ins. Euros 425
