Ceremonial huipil (blouse, Patzicia village, Guatemala.
Cotton, silk.
1970s or 80s.
46" (117 cm) wide by 20" (50.8 cm) high.
Ex. private San Francisco collection
The hand-spun cotton threads used for the body of this large huipil make for an incredibly soft fabric. There are natural brown warp threads called ixcaco woven next to blue threads in the stripes; the supplementary brocade and seams are woven with silk. It's in excellent condition with a little soil on the front. The color is a true cherry red and does not lean toward orange as it does in the photographs. Ceremonial huipils from this village are rare. i have dozens more huipil from the 70s and 80s; if there's a particular village huipil you are looking for, please email me.
