Ceremonial huipil (blouse), Patzun, Chimaltenango, Guatemala Cotton, silk, 1970s or earlier 51" (129.5 cm) wide by 24" (61 cm) high Ex. private San Francisco collection Handspun cotton threads are woven on a back-strap loom for this large ceremonial huipil, with warp stripes of yellow, green, red, blue and orange. The round neck opening is embroidered in colorful silk thread with a gathered green cotton applique semi-circle in the center of each side. The symbolism is of the sun and moon; joining the two panels is an embroidery technique called 'randa'. There is some soiling on both sides.
