This unique carpet was specially spun during the Footok Festival, which revolves around the 450 year old Tibetan monastery of Olangchung Gola in the Kanchenjunga area of Nepal. The handcraft uses purely natural local dyes and complex patterns that require knowledge and skill that has been passed down for generations. This artefact is completely handspun on a traditional loom. The ancient symbolism shows the peacock and the dragon framed by an opening in the clouds that symbolises the enlightened state. The dragon is holding pearls that symbolise wisdom and health, by clutching the pearls he controls the water and create fog, rain or even downpour. The peacock is the most important bird in Tibetan symbolism. It’s a metaphor for love and as the mortal enemy of the snake it can transmutate venom into nectar.
The carpet will be auctioned to raise funds for the earthquake proof reconstruction of the Buddhist village of Ratankot in the severely hit Sindhupalchok district of Nepal. For more information look up Shock Safe Nepal.
