Back
moroccan berber high atlas carpet. An old and rare carpet from the Berbers of Ait bou Ichaouen in the eastern High Atlas near the border with Algeria. Weaving in this remote area was only discovered in the early 1990`s and we have to thank Alfred and Suzanne Saulniers for their extensive original research culminating in their text book "Ait bou Ichaouen" for much information. Berber designs are often simplistic portayals of natural things which surround them, supplemented by items of superstition and references to historical occasions. Hidden in the field of this carpet is the motif which means "Berber" in the Amazigh language. The close up shows a human figure next to a tall tree. Floral motifs abound. The carpet is intact with long attractive kilim ends. Reference 2713. Size 340 x 225 cms., or 11ft. 2ins. x 7ft. 5ins. Euros 2370.
