Back
This is a rare vintage Tibetan rug and is approximately 40 years old. The rug was hand knotted on a traditional wooden loom using age-old techniques and only 100% natural dyes. It was woven by one of the most historically renowned weavers in Olanchung Gola village, the mother of Donga Sherpa. Today, such ancient designs are no longer woven in the village.
The rug is made from pure Tibetan highland sheep's wool (called changpel) and is distinctively thick and heavy. The brown and black checkerboard- style 'khaden' was used for sitting and sleeping on and beautifully combines the simplicity and modernity of such classical artisanal weaving. The traditional gau (amulet) motif is very difficult to find these days and this ancient geometric design is believed to be among the oldest to be found on Tibetan rugs.
The rug is in excellent overall condition and has a thick 10mm pile.
Provenance
The rug was personally sourced from Olanchung Gola village and is a very distinctive, high-quality piece that will appeal to both collectors and interior decorators alike. The dimensions are dimensions are 205cm x 85cm.
