Chinese Decorated Papers: Chinoiserie for Three. Bird & Bull Press, Newtown, Pennsylvania. 1987. a beautiful hand-made book from a fine private press. Very good condition. 8" x 10". Red leather spine and tips; covers of hand-made paper over boards; green leather embossed gold title on spine; embossed gold design on cover. This is copy 84 of 325 copies. Includes 23 actual samples of Chinese "tea-chest" papers - each sample 6" x 8.5" (some are gilt); 68 pages of fascinating text, including how the papers were made and letters between the authors and the printer; 6 black/white photographs of the papers being prepared for inclusion in the books; price lists from the Japan Paper Company, New York, 1926 that list among other types of papers "Nanking Papers". These samples were imported from Foshan, China in the 1930s by the Englishman Walter f. Crtttall (1887-1956) to use as wallpaper in his house in Essex. They were found by the authors, Hans and Tanya Schmoller, "lovingly kept" by Crittall's widow. Hans Peter Schmoller (1916-1985) was a well-respected book designer. He designed covers at The Curwen Press in London and Penguin Books where he was the Head of Production. The publisher, Henry Morris founded the Bird & Bull Press in 1958, one of America's oldest private presses. As Morris said, "It pleases me to know that without the Bird & Bull, many books on worthwhile, albeit esoteric subjects would probably never have been published."
