Afshar rug, mid 19th cen. Woven like a fine textile, this classic Afshar rug draws rows of radiant 'boteh' paisleys against a deep indigo ground. The delicate border is comprised of thin stripes traced with flowering plants in the manner of Persian textiles of the 18th and 19th centuries. This piece shows classic Afshar color, contrasting rich reds and golds against darker blues. Of particular interest is the abrash, or modulation, of light and medium blues in the border.
