Antique Chinese Rug 2166, Size: 2' x 2', Origin: China, 19th Century - This fascinating and unique antique Oriental rug -- an antique Chinese rug made some time during the nineteenth century -- represents the various different avenues that have historically been occupied by traditional weavings across the Eastern world. On this highly unusual pile seat rug, scalloped borders enclosing snippets of flowering vine provide a border for the triangular field which similarly consists of bits of vines. The whole design is surmounted by a classic Chinese cloud pattern along the upper edge. The design has the controlled decorative austerity of classic Chinese ornament, along with the rich, pungent coloration for which Chinese rugs are famed. a piece of art that is just as much a cultural artifact as it is a beautiful example of Chinese rug-making, this fascinating piece represents the opportunity to own a piece that speaks to an ancient and proud culture.
