a stunning fisherman's coat from Aomori. a thickly woven jacket worn by a fisherman, probably a man with a higher rank. The condition is outstanding with stitching around neck and armpits. Superstitious beliefs had it that the area around the neck needs to be kept warm to prevent misfortune. The woven fabric is made from shredded cotton of other fabrics. The fibers literally carry the history of a whole region. Due to decades of exposure to wind, sun, and saltwater, it has a beautiful fade. History Late Edo, early Meiji period, around 1850s. Aomori, northern Japan. Fabric Cotton homespun and hand-loomed. All natural dyeing techniques.
