a long and narrow textile panel, 264 x 73 cm., 8’7” x 2’5”, with a repeat of circular medallions enclosing birds or endless knots is interspersed with satyr’s masks and leaves which reminds of medieval iconography. The structure of it is rather complicated: The green ground is woven in thin silk while the design is formed by horizontal floating cream and yellow woollen threads, which are fixed to the ground with vertical silk threads forming a regular grid pattern at the front. The thick woollen design threads are handspun, just slightly twisted and showing traces of metal-wrapping. The panel has been once edged with fabric on all sides; the back has been stabilised using vertical jute straps. Signs of age and wear, the silk is gone in many places. Its twin, with a silk ground in blue, was sold at Rippon Boswell’s on June 2015. Back then described in the catalogue as ‘Spanish 18th century’. But could it be possibly early English ‘Arts and Crafts’ ? Helpful comments are very welcome.
