Back
ottoman embroidery which is antique and dates from the late 19th century. It is probably from the Greek Island group of the Dodecanese which were part of the Ottoman Empire of the period. The design shows repeated portrayals of an eminent man dressed in the style of the time with a pill box shaped hat and flowing three quarter length coat. He appears to be holding objects which could be lamps or flowers in each hand. The linen base has exceptionally fine silk embroidery for the designs. There is a piece which is plate 44 of "Embroidery of the Greek Islands" by Roderick Taylor which has very similar borders both in design and color. It is attributed to the nearby Cyclades Islands. Page 18 of the book "Greek Style" shows a man wearing the clothes depicted here. Reference 2811. Size 36 x 52 cms., or 14 x 21 ins. Euros 155. sold thank you.
