Chinese for export to Portugal
Silver and polychrome silk floss embroidered hanging in the Chinese manner. a large central peony is framed by pairs of birds, lotus flowers, clouds and phoenix, all derived from the Chinese Taoist tradition and eight Buddhist auspicious symbols. Also evident but more discretely are pomegranates and the pious pelican, obviously referring to the western Christian world. This subtle blend of iconography was produced in Macau for the Portuguese market until the mid-seventeenth century. The Dutch, the British and the French soon dominated this "new world" trade commonly as the East India Company. Excellent condition conservation and colors.
Measures: height 235 cm x 197 cm wide
