Pre-Columbian Belt Bag. a.d. 1100 - a.d. 1400. Far North coastal region of Chile. Woven in a complimentary warp-faced weave from alpaca fiber. Size: 11 x 32 inches. Rare, finely woven and beautiful, this type of wide belt also doubled as a bag. It was wrapped around the waist and fastened with simple braided ties (missing). Its opening is at the center top. This bag was meant to hold items including coca leaves, herbal remedies as well as various utensils including ceremonial and personal items. Bags from this region with this kind of coloration are quite rare and highly desirable. They rarely survive in such well preserved condition. The dark purple on the back of the bag as lost some of its intensity except in a few areas where the original color is preserved otherwise this bag remains supple and the colors on the front face unaltered. a choice collector's piece.
