Darshan Dwar - This exceptionally vibrant and effusive Bagh is called a Darshan Dwar. They were sacred textiles created by a devotee as an offering to a temple, a Gurudwara, or any shrine for the fulfilment of a vow. Literally translated, the darshan dwar is the entrance to the abode of the divine or the gate from which one can view the divine. Made in East Punjab, this piece is of a handspun, handwoven cotton textile embroidered with untwisted silk threads (pat) and natural dyes. It is always embroidered on a red ground with contrasting coloured threads. The composition balances the rigidity of the architecture with the organic lines of the human figures. These figures are interspersed within the mirroring rows of shrine gates with painted tops. There are 5 gates in each panel and the spaces in between have been embroidered with various kinds of geometric patterns. This richly embroidered piece depicts figures as the presence of the deity or worshippers. Geometric patterns of lozenges, triangles and circles have been worked in multiple colours and stitches. The ground fabric has been strategically used to become an intrinsic part of the design and has a peculiar charm of its own.
