Here is a beautiful old 19th. century Quran/book cover.
Embroidered all natural silk floss in colors of powder
blue, olive green, yellow, maroon and purple red.
The Quran cover is very finely embroidered in petit
point (gul Sheraz) and lined with an old Uzbek Ikat
fabric which also provides the sleeve for the book's
front and back covers to slide into. One side of the cover
has stronger colors, this was probably the result of the
front side always being exposed to light and the back
side always facing down and protected from the light.
This attests to the age of this piece, these rarely come
up for sale. note: This was originally collected by
famed Central Asian textile collector and dealer
Pip Raou, see "Ikats, Silks from Central Asia: the
Pip Rau Collection for her Ikats. Rich natural colors,
an artistic gem of a by gone era.
