Many ancient cultures revered powerful felines. Andean cultures were no exception. Large felines like the leopard and the cougar were associated with stealth and enormous power. Their ability to hunt in the dark inspired awe and wonder. Leopard skins and textiles with images like these were considered power objects that conveyed prestige. This early coca bag depicts spotted felines with powerful shaman figures. They appear to be dancing or in the thrall of a trace state. Pre-columbian textiles with such individualized drawing and animated, large scale figures are seldom seen. This rare, unique bag dates to a.d. 400 - 800. It has survived somewhat marked by the ravages of time, yet still retains the magical qualities it was meant to display. The bag has been cleaned and conserved to a lining. The size is 7 x 14.5 inches. This is a great little piece with unique imagery and lasting power.
