China: Exceptionally fine and rare three paneled ikat blanket from the Li people of Hainan Island, Southwest China. The lighter wide indigo bands consists of a coarse warp fiber most likely linen or hemp and the narrow brown and dark blue indigo bands are made of a thinner and softer thread, probably cotton or cotton and bast fiber mix. In near perfect condition, there is one tiny pinhole and minor dark staining (this could also be abrash) on the inside- please see last enlargement. i have had a few Li blankets over the years and this the only i have seen with an indigo ikat construction. a similar pattern can be seen amongst the men’s jackets of the Ha speaking group although they are not ikat. l: 218cm/86in and w: 110cm/42.5in. This made from all handspun thread and natural dye- circa mid 20th century.
