Persian Rasht Textile, late 19th cen. 4'3"x6'11". Red and indigo felted, or rather “fulled”— tightly woven woolen textile sections—were pieced together to form the panel. Very fine appliqué work using this same material was then used to form birds and an array of blossoms and floral forms throughout, which were then outlined and elegantly embroidered in silk. This piece may well have been made as a solitary, luxurious hanging.
