Kachin Skirt: Fine and rare Jinghpaw (aka Jingpo in China) “pukhang” heirloom wrap around skirt from Burma’s northern most state of Kachin. This piece is woven in three panels from two ply handspun cotton thread and goat or dog hair yarn supplementary weft pattern This piece is intricately composed and tightly woven lacking the garish colors of a recent piece. 50 years old plus. As with many of the Burmese highland peoples, textiles play an important cultural role determining status, “bride price” gifts, and funeral rites i.e., that a person wants to “look their best when laid to rest.” References: Textiles of the Hill Tribes of Burma- Michael Howard, Vanishing Tribes of Burma- Richard Kiran and Mantles of Merit- David and Barbara Fraser.
