Antique Mapuche chief's ikat poncho, Chile. Unusual small size, which may be for someone of small stature or for some special reason? Very early 20th century; possibly late 19th century. Finely woven. All wool. Beautiful abrashed madder red. This piece is a ikat-dyed 'trarikanmakun' poncho, which is the most prestigious in Mapuche culture and has the rare layout of an all-over stepped-cross pattern known as 'sanitran'. The ikat-dyed pieces are the rarest of the Mapuche textiles, accounting for perhaps only 2% of all Mapuche weavings.
Very good condition for its age with minor wear at neck opening and fringes. Minor stains.
