Khmer Sampot Hol: Rare silk Cambodian ikat lower garment l: 288cm/113.in and w: 90cm/35.5in with twill weave; unique to Khmer textiles. This skill died out during the reign of the Khmer Rouge and has not yet recovered the skills and technique to make a textile of this quality. The size of this piece indicates it would have been worn by an upper class family much like a pantaloon with center being passed through the legs and tucked into the waist. This is a very old style and may be observed on the bas relief friezes in Angkor Wat. i bought this piece about 20 years ago in the “Russian Market”, Phnom Pehn. Please note the complexity and fine detail of the design, this dates to late 19thCE/early20CE. There is fading, and numerous small holes though out as well as 4 patches sewn on the surface. The photos do not do this piece justice so please view enlargements for the vibrancy of the colors. The silk is incredibly soft and only weighs 220 grams, quite light for near 3 meter textile.
