Wari Headband, a.d 600 - 900. See related examples from Met,TMC and dma shown inside. This Wari period headband is woven in a provincial style found in the coastal regions of Peru. It features three mythological beings possibly representing shamans. They stand in the traditional shamans pose each wearing a head band with geometric design from which sprout stylized snake-like creatures. Large ear spools are displayed on either side of the head. The figures wear patterned tunics. The mouth of each is open - bearing teeth seen as small squares and have claw-like hands and feet. Issuing from the waist are two snake-like figures and adjacent to the figure on each side are other zoomorphic creatures. Below see examples from the Met, the Textile Museum of Canada and Dallas Museum of Art for comparison. This textile is somewhat fragile, but would mount up quite nicely. As you can see it is certainly the equal of the museum pieces seen here. It is nearly complete and very readable. It is selvedged on three sides - missing only the simple finish at the bottom end. Size is: 19.5 x 4.75 inches. Hard to find and graphically very interesting.
