An outstanding silk on silk embroidered antique Uzbek suzani / susani from the rural Shahrisaz regions of Uzbekistan. For its type, it is a relatively older example dating to the 3rd quarter of 19th century. The red silk ground is silk warp / cotton weft (an indication of older silk weaving). The fine chain-stitched silk embroidery is beautifully executed. The design is fantastic. The floral motifs in the field and the shrubs and botehs in the borders are drawn in a free flowing manner, giving the design movement. The natural colours are magnificent with some fantastic blues and unique natural pink that could be insect dye (?). This excellent piece came from a very renowned but recently deceased textile collector / scholar. The condition has some expected abrasion in the field to the silk ground which is not distracting. The embroidery is well in tact and in real life the piece is a visual delight. Offered at a good price. size 150cm x 120cm (59" x 48").
