Ahuayo (woman's mantle), Aymara culture, Potosi/Oruro, Bolivia. Camelid yarns, natural dyes, pre-1850. 47.5" 120.6 cm) high by 43" (109.2 cm) wide. The weaving of this piece is unique to the Aymara people because of their use of chimi, which are two-ply, bi-chrome yarns. In the ground of this piece, there are three colors: cochineal, gray and brown, twisted and used as one warp thread. The result is a luminous blend of color that would be impossible to achieve any other way. Good condition, with an area of reweaving at bottom edge.
