Spectacular large complete Chimu panel. 25 x 68 inches. This super rare Chimu textile has a strong graphic quality and real impact. It features what appear to be monkeys, coatimundi, flying shamen, two large birds with big eyes along the right side, possibly condors, crayfish, birds and the lower torsos of two flying dragon-like beings - probably representing South American Caiman. The colors are strong and the panel has all of its selvedges. It was probably made as a hanging rather than a garment and would have had another panel or more sewn to it. See the image of a heavily damaged, fragmented panel that was once likely sewn to this one. It features half of a very large Dragon-like creature that would have spanned the two panels. The lower torso of this creature runs across my panel in two areas. i include a mock up of how it might have looked. i have not had a Chimu piece of this scale in over 40 years of handling Pre-Columbian material. It came from a well know and respected collection. If you have the space and want something collectable with genuine power - this is a great textile to own.
