Plains Indians front piece for a pipe bag, Crow Nation, Montana, 2nd qtr 19thC, glass pony beads and large barrel shaped silver beards on hide, sewn with sinew and narrow strips of hide, enhanced with applied graphite color mineral pigment, the red bead top left is two tone with opaque under white, a type called Cornaline d'Aleppo, introduced to North America ca. 1825 by the Hudson Bay Company, and highly valued by Native Americans, a beaver hide could be purchased by a trader for a "bunch" of seed beads, or just 6 Cornaline d'Aleppo beads, pony beads began to fall out of fashion in the 1840's when small round seed beads became popular, so the bag most likely dates to the 2nd qtr of the 19thC, the hide is a bit brittle, some soiling, no major rips or holes, the approximate size of the body is 6 inches by 14 inches, not including the straps, Source "The History of Beads...expanded edition", by Lois Sherr Dubin, shipping is extra
