Lecture in Los Angeles: Saturday, January 27, 2019, 10 a.m.: "Screen Printed Textiles from Australia’s Top End," Dr. Joanna Barrkman, Senior Curator of Southeast Asian & Pacific Arts, Fowler Museum at Ucla. Presented by Textile Museum Associates of Southern California, Inc. Contemporary Australian textile artists working in five Aboriginal owned art centers in the Northern Territory, or ‘Top End’ of Australia, have translated their designs and motifs into bold and dynamic patterns that are silk-screened on textiles.  As the enthusiasm for these textiles grows in the marketplace and increasingly provides sustainable livelihoods for artists living on their traditional lands, the history of this genre, as well as the technical, social and economic issues surrounding its production, deserves to be better known. Dr. Joanna Barrkman’s talk explores the skill and ingenuity of these Aboriginal artists and their strategic collaborative approaches to textile production and contemporary designs that uphold their cultures, identities, and ancient connections to traditional lands in the modern world. Dr Joanna Barrkman is the Senior Curator, Southeast Asia and Pacific Arts, Fowler Museum at Ucla. She has formerly held curatorial positions at Charles Darwin University (Cdu) Art Collection and Art Gallery (Darwin), the National Gallery of Australia (Canberra) and the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory (Darwin). She has curated exhibitions in Australia, Indonesia, Timor-Leste, New Zealand and Usa. She co-curated "Textiles of Timor: Island in the Woven Sea" and co-edited the eponymous publication, with Roy w. Hamilton in 2014, at the Fowler Museum at Ucla. Dr. Barrkman obtained her doctorate from the Australian National University, Canberra in 2017. Her dissertation "Return to Baguia: an ethnographic museum collection on the edge of living memory" documented the Baguia Collection from Timor-Leste, acquired by Dr. Alfred Bühler in 1935 as part of his expedition to Portuguese Timor for the Museum der Kulturen, Basel Switzerland. Dr. Barrkman invites Tma/sc members to bring Aboriginal textile items for show & tell.
