An outstanding and rare antique Uzbek silk adras Ikat hanging from Bukhara / Bokhara, dating to the mid 19th century. This very early example is a silk warp and cotton weft Ikat (a technique associated with older examples of this textile art form). It has an exceptionally intricate peacock design with gorgeous polychrome feathers surrounding a repeating tulip. Only a handful of such peacock design exists, one published in the Guido Goldman collection. This early design is executed through tie dye technique using six natural dyes. Often ikats with over five colours were considered as some of the most sophisticated examples because of the complexity of tie dye weaving. It has some abrasion in some parts and a few hardly noticeable wears stitched up and some patina as seen in photos. But it is expected of a piece over 170 years old. It has a gorgeous original block print cotton lining, consistent with the age. a real top end collection piece that doesn't come into market often and is offered at a reasonable price. size: 198cm x 140cm (6’6” x 3’2”)
