Kilim, 360 x 200 Cm. Karabach, dated 1912.
Armenian caracters. see detail photo - it says something like 5 Februari than 1912 and after the date two caracters, and a hole behind - looks a diliberate made hole to take away the last two caracters. To conceal a name?
Interesting detail: it has little loops to hang it on a wall - they seem original -
This kilim probably was made to hang like you see on the photo.
That may well be te reason is was conservated so well.
Very fine weft Kelim, Literature:
Azeraijani-Caucasian Rugs,
The Ulmke Collection, Switzerland
Siawosch u. Azadi – Latif Kerimov – Werner Zollinger
isbn 3-925-813-10-1
Blz 216. Jebrail district, Karabach
Beginning of the 19th century.
the one in the book is 308 x 177 Cm.
In the book a little dispute about where it is made - Kerimov says Karabach Zollinger
says Georgia. seems that Kerimov was right looking at this kilim. Armenian caracters.
There is a well kept border between those two countries.
Other autors place this kind in the Derbent area. There were in 1912 a lot of Armenian people there. They were deported to the West part fo the Caucasus by the Russians after 1920. In favour of the Turkic speaking Azeri.
