Beautiful vintage unfinished huipil or cover. It may have been ceremonial in nature as the supplementary weft are silk, according to the tag, though i think they may be an early rayon floss. It is woven in one width, which is unusual. It is probably from Totonicapan, or may be San Pedro Sacatepequez, San Marcos, Guatemala. From a the collection of a well-known museum. Collector also known. All provenance will be given to the buyer only. The collector was in Guatemala at various times in the 1930's and 1940's. It was accessioned in 1955. i am dating this huipil to the 1940's, though it may be a bit earlier. Fine indigo cotton base with fine hand-spun cotton and silk floss(though i think it is early rayon floss) supplementary wefts. May have been made to use as a ceremonial cover, since there is no open area to cut out a head opening.
Very good condition for age. Possibly never used. Sides not closed. Minor thread pulls. See photographs, which were taken outdoors without a flash on a sunny day.
