Pre-Columbian knotted headdress, Arica, Faze Cabuza, Tiwanaku period - a.d. 300 - 1,100. This is an unusually small (miniature-like) hat with ribbed chevron pattern. It is a rare type of four cornered hat from Northern Chile. This piece is unusually small for the type. It measures approximately 7 inches tall x 4 inches in diameter and the red top section is 2 inches square. Its size suggests it was made for an infant or as a ritual headdress for an idol. The few such hats I've seen over the years have all been quite a bit larger than this example. Several examples of this chevron patterned hat type are published and reside in the Museo Chileno de Arte Precolumbino, Arica Chile.
