Back
Pre-Columbian knotted headdress, Arica, Faze Cabuza, Tiwanaku period - a.d. 300 - 1,100. This is an unusually small (miniature-like) hat with ribbed chevron pattern. It is a rare type of four cornered hat from Northern Chile. This piece is unusually small for the type. It measures approximately 7 inches tall x 4 inches in diameter and the red top section is 2 inches square. Its size suggests it was made for an infant or as a ritual headdress for an idol. The few such hats I've seen over the years have all been quite a bit larger than this example. Several examples of this chevron patterned hat type are published and reside in the Museo Chileno de Arte Precolumbino, Arica Chile. They tend to be made in either brown and red or blue and red coloration like this piece. The beautiful, classic Wari four-cornered pile hat shown here for scale is also available for sale.
