Rare Faience Egyptian Amulets
Five clay faience (blue -green) amulets from Egypt that are mounted on a custom stand. The amulets are a Pharaohs head, a sphinx, a Wedjat eye (Eye of Horus), Djed (pillar) and Priestess. An amulet is an object believed to have certain positive properties that, as the amulet’s main function, can magically be bestowed upon its owner. In ancient Egypt, this magical power was often derived from a combination of several aspects, such as the amulet’s shape, decoration, inscription, color, material, and words spoken over the piece or acts performed with it. Egyptian faience is a non-clay based ceramic composed of crushed quartz or sand, with small amounts of calcite lime and a mixture of alkalis, displaying surface vitrification due to the soda lime silica glaze often containing copper pigments to create a bright blue-green luster. Each mounted on single custom antiqued bronze mounts.
