a museum grade and exceptionally rare antique Ottoman voided silk velvet and metal work textile panel known as Catma or Çatma. It is a very early example possibly dating to 16th century. Catma panels are considered as the most coveted of all Ottoman textiles. They were made for the Ottoman imperial court by some of the finest artisans brought to Busra and Istanbul from across the empire. These textiles had to meet strict specifications of quality as they were for the aristocracy and it was aimed to Compete with the Italian Renaissance voided velvet work of that time. Earlier examples of Catma, from the 16th century, such as this piece would have sophisticated floral motifs with intricate detail. Later 17th century the designs evolved to simple palmettes that we often see in Iznik pottery. It is tightly woven in the form of voided silk velvet where the voided areas are filled with metal work. It is an extremely fine weaving and a true masterpiece. Similar examples can be seen in major museums around the world. It has gorgeous colour and majestic design. It has natural age patina and though with slight surface wear, one can forgive it considering the age and quality. It is secured and mounted on a red fabric and ready to be stretched on a frame. Much more beautiful in real life than photos.
