Fine and rare early 20th century Miao baby carrying strap from Zhouxi, Guizhou China. Please note that every diamond shaped medallion pattern is different. This is woven from all handspun silk warp and cotton weft. This is an incredibly labor intensive weaving process, in the old days, a skilled craftswomen could only weave about 1 centimeter a day, today no one is able to duplicate this. Total length of the brocaded panel is 134cm/52in and w: 16cm/6.5in. i had a contemporary “mud cloth” border sewn on. There is one small hole at one end, consisting of broken warp threads with intact weft. i put a single grain of rice in the last enlargement to emphasize the fineness of this weave.
