baluch/belouch rug from the region of Herat in western Afghanistan, circa 1950. Although small and in the format of a grain bag face there is no evidence that it was used for this purpose and it appears to be a small, very fine rug - possibly a dowry weaving. The warps and wefts are of wool and the designs in the field have significant amounts of camel hair and silk. The wide goat hair overcasting is typical of these older Belouch pieces. It has an extraordinary depth of colour and the lustrous pile is soft and silky to the touch. Reference 3161. Size 90 x 50 cms., or 36 x 20 inches. Euros 285 sold, thank you.
