Ushak region carpet fragment of a large mosque prayer carpet with three rows of three prayer niches, late 18th century, 400cm high and 245cm wide. Condition: good overall even pile. Compared to most large mosque carpets of the period it has an atypically vigorous tribal feel with its strong simple meander borders dividing the niches and bold floral infill above each niche unlike the more curvilinear and intricately patterned designs on most Ushak mosque carpets. The central motif within each each niche is a box form with two flowers radiating from each vertex. These motifs read as pinwheels and impart a considerable sense of motion and dynamism to the carpet as a whole.
