An exceptional antique Uzbek Lakai Tribe silk embroidered 'saygosha' hanging, dating to 19th century. These 'v' shaped hangings were dowry textiles, initially made to attach to the elegant and decorative bridal bed covers and eventually used as prized dowry wall hanging in the yurt. One sees a lot of saygoshas that are cross stitched and younger. But seldom one comes across these really old examples that are intricately chain-stitched on red wool ground. The work is remarkable. The design is very archaic and pretty sophisticated. Rarely one sees such complex motifs (pomegranate with rams horn and other archaic floral designs) in saygoshas that often appear in Lakai square and shield embroideries The rich colours bring out the design. The polychrome silk tassels are also fantastic. a magnificent textile art in good shape. 105cm x 69cm (41"x27") tassels 17cm (6.5")
