Exquisitely woven Pre-Columbian Wari headband. a.d. 600 - 800. Damaged, but a complete weaving with ends intact and selvedges in evidence. The design shows profile heads with headdresses and stylized wing motifs flanked by stepped triangle forms. The textile shows masterful spinning in its fine two ply alpaca yarns. The warps are cotton. The color palette indicates a North Coast provenance. It is tissue thin - soft and supple - not dry, brittle or powdery and is clean and ready for a good conservator to make it sparkle again. a great example. Size: 4 x 19.5 inches.
