Back
Large Kazak Rug -- 5.2 x 9.7. Lots of interesting things about this rug. An inscription (i cant read) and a date which only makes sense from the back side of the rug. It seems they used the Farsi alphabet to craft a Gregorian date (ie., 1903). I've never seen that before and i wonder if that might indicate the rug is Armenian. (i dunno). Another observation: is it really a Kazak or Karabaugh... or some sort of hybrid. Note that half the rug has cotton weft (Karabaugh); the other half red dyed wool (Kazak). What does this mean? Again, i dont know, but its interesting. Maybe the most interesting thing is how beautiful it is w/ all sorts of mystical iconography, great color, and rare large size.
condition
There are several worn areas w/ exposed foundation, mostly on the near end and largely attributable to brown oxidation. w/ careful examination i also found a few areas of old re-piling and a few areas of foundation touchup. This is a "warts and all" assessment and you have to put your nose on the rug to find any of this stuff. (est quod est)$30 usa shipping.
Call Rob for in-hand condition report.
