Antique Caucasian Shirvan prayer rug with lattice on an ivory ground.
Dated 1320 / 1902.
a superb example of this well known group of prayer rugs, this rug has excellent colour and is very well drawn. This very finely woven, white-ground Shirvan prayer rug shows a precisely drawn diamond lattice design enclosing large palmettes. Two red hands ("Hand of Fatima"), two combs and many small animals are depicted next to the bridge-shaped arch positioned high up. The long and narrow format of this group clearly deviates from other prayer rugs made in the Shirvan area.
Good condition, original finishes all around, slight damage to the selvedge at the bottom left.
The rug has even wear and medium pile.
Hand washed and ready for use or display, the rug would make a superb wall hanging.
This rug was part of the internationally renowned 'Zaleski Collection' sold at Rippon Boswell.
Stock Number: h-326.
