Antique South Caucasian Kazak long rug with a vertical row of five octagons on a clear red ground.
Circa 1880.
This is a truly outstanding example of Caucasian weaving, the wool quality is excellent, very soft to the touch, the dyes are first class, giving clear bright colours. The balance of the design and the wonderful yellow ground border sets this rug apart from most other Caucasians of this period.
A very similar rug is illustrated in 'Qarajeh to Quba' by Raoul e. Tschebull, Hali Publications, plate 41; page 174. Where the rug is attributed to the village of Boyuk Bahmanli, on the Aras river in the Fuzuli district of Karabagh.
The rug is in excellent condition with very slight wear and good pile. There is some corrosion to the black as one would expect.
The rug is suitable for normal domestic use.
The rug has been hand washed and is ready for use or display.
