Antique Caucasian Kuba rug fragment with the Afshan design.
19th century.
This is an interesting fragment of a once much larger carpet probably over 3.50m in length. This fragment has been reduced in length and possibly once had another border although this is not certain. The fragment has a date of 1204 and an inscription to the top end, the date translates to 1789. The date would seem to be rather early and i believe this fragment to date from the 19th century.
The fragment has a bold colour palette which is also found in a number of other known examples, which may suggest that they were woven in the same workshop. Examples of these rugs are found in a number of major museum and private collections.
A related example is published and discussed at length by Ian Bennett on page 241, plate 309 of 'Oriental Rugs Volume 1 Caucasian.
The fragment is in good condition with even wear and medium pile, good in places. The colours are outstanding with a rich palette and real depth of colour.
Hand washed and ready for use or display. This collectible item would make a superb wall hanging.
