Late 18th Century Anatolian Ladik Rug.The term “prayer rug”, once obligatory for describing any rug presenting a mihrab and niche design, implied that the rugs were used for this purpose. However, it has now been established that most of them were not used for prayer, but served as wall hangings depicting Islamic iconography; they are now described as niche carpets due to their design. This old example of the Ladik group has a plain red field.The rare drawing of its main border is striking, and also occurs in Innice weavings.Obvious signs of age and wear, ıt has few old restorations on it.
