An exceptional and rare example of antique Uzbek Lakai tribe silk embroidered suzani dating to late 19th century. Often silk on coloured ground suzanis are wrongly attributed to Lakai when they were in fact made by Uzbeks and Tajiks in and around city of Shahrisabz. Lakai tribe were nomadic and made small square or shield shaped silk embroideries on wool ground trade fabrics. Seldom did they produce large suzani sized embroideries. Only a handful of known examples exist in the world and this is one such rare example. It has fine chain stitched silk embroidery on a red wool fabric in the field and on a polychrome of similar fabrics on the bordered. The field follows a classic rounder and bogey shaped motifs interspersed with twirling green vines and yellow palmettes. The borders repeat the classic lakai border motifs in an array of varying colours. a great colourful piece in a very good shape worthy of any top collection offered at a fair price. size: 150cm x 97cm (59” x 38”).
