Fine little 19th century knit coin purse from Bolivia - for the knitter in your family. All natural colors. Made with a secondary external pocket that can only be accessed from inside the purse. The concept of a "pocket flap" goes back to the Pre-Columbian period in the Andes and can be seen in a number of coca bags where such a pocket is used to store an alkaline substance that when mixed with saliva and coca leaves in the mouth activates the stimulating properties of the coca leaves. In the case of this knit bag it was probably used for small change. See the u.s. 25 cent piece in the center image of the composite pic for scale. Size: 5 x 5.5 inches. I've only seen a couple of these over the years. Anyone who loves knitting will be impressed with the fine work, delicate handle and soft texture of the Alpaca fiber in this little charmer. Perfect condition.
i have another small unique, Andean pouch posted on my pages. See: http://rugrabbit.com/node/207022
