Finnish ryijy handmade by Aino Salo. Ryijy's (Swedish 'rya') are traditional Scandinavian wool rugs with a long pile, often 'shaggy', and usually between 2.5cm to 5cm (1 to 2 inches) in length. They were created using a form of the Ghiordes knot to make the double-sided pile fabric. The first ryijy / rya's originated in the early fifteenth century as coarse, heavy covers used by mariners instead of furs. As time progressed, the rugs have evolved to be lighter and more colorful. From the late 1700's onwards their use has evolved to become now more traditionally used as bed or 'sofa' covers, and also displayed on a wall. This is a beautiful example of an Aino Salo piece that was woven in 1955 (the date was woven into the back of the ryijy when made, as is often seen in one-off hand-made pieces) with an array of motifs and border elements. Size 2.00m x 1.37m (78.5" x 44"). Wool warp and weft. In excellent condition.
