Two nice antique Moroccan Azemmour textile fragments ca 1800 silk embroidery on linen ground. These embroideries with peacocks and doves quite unlike other Moroccan embroidery were made exclusively by female Jewish embroiderers. Jewish and Muslim refugees arrived in the ancient Punic city port of Azemmour after their expulsion from Spain in 1610 by Philip the 2 nd. These embroideries always in this red on white format originally 10-40 cm wide and up to 2.5 metres long were made to cover the sides of mattresses, as hangings or trimmings for curtains or cushions. These embroideries show a localised interpretation of motifs found from Russia, Northern Europe to Italy ( Asssi work ) and the greek islands and dating back to Hispano Moresque and Byzantine periods.
