Antique Khamseh or Qashqai rug, early 20Th century. 258 x 167cm (101,5” x 66”). a piece with excellent quality of velvety wool, with varied and saturated dyes dominated by an opulent hue of purplish red. It shows a highly elaborated design; the medallions display the so-called ‘Qashqa’i Tribal Emblem’. There is a true ‘collection’ of fantastic birds. Above and below the column of medallions, four gigantic birds, with long tails and necks, are made to fit into the existing space; multicolored concentric lines enhance their wings. Small birds with crests like plants are on the sides of the medallions, and two human figures are above the lower one. The unusual main border is a succession of pomegranates alternating with peacocks with large multicolored tails, flanked by minute gazelles and boteh. The ivory-colored secondary borders, decorated with ‘bird heads’, provide color contrast and emphasize each of the parts. The weaver succeeded in maintaining all the figures in the guards in a vertical position instead of symmetrically towards the center. Very good condition, even medium to low pile all around.
