Kutch Embroidery hanging, 3rd-4th Quarter of the 19th century. The ground is in handspun cotton in a soft red with tie die patterning and wonderful silk embroidery. It seems to have been woven as a strip of a larger piece with another side mirroring this one. The colors in the silk are exceptionally rich and saturated with cochineal insect dyes and strong natural colors. The embroidery is embellished with small hand made mirrors, a craft that is disappearing. There are a couple of small and light stains and a small darned area. 54 x 220 cm.
